Paperweight: A Newspaper of Visual and Material Culture draws together artists, designers, academics, curators, writers and researchers around a theme, to explore the territory of visual and material culture from different vantage points. In these explorations, Paperweight offers reports from the front-line of visual and material culture, running into the heat of battle and reporting back with dispatches.

This issue Screen is themed to mark the 200th anniversary of the first appearance of the word screen as a media term, with the publication of Maria Eliza Rundell’s instructions ‘To make Transparent Screens for the Exhibition of Phantasmagoria’ in her The New Family Receipt-Book of 1810.

Contributions include Mervyn Heard on Smoke Screens; Øyvind Vågnes on the Zapruder film of JFK’s Assassination; Matt Lodder on Televising the Tattoo; Marquard Smith on Metadata; Howard Pensly on Boatology; Zoë Hendon on Firescreens; an interview with research scientist Alexander Doust on screen futures; Harriet Riches on photographer Sally Mann; Laine Nooney on video game designer Roberta Williams; Geo Takach on stage vs. screen-writing; Paul Micklethwaite on the Ecology of Screens; and Rebecca Onion with her Notes on Toys, Screening Winky-Dink.
